Life is hard

When I have someone (and it happens all the time) tell me “life is hard.” My most excellent reply is, “compared to what?”

The other day I was talking to a car salesman. He told me that things had been pretty rough and he wasn’t making any money. I sympathized with him. I said,” surely you had it worse in the military”. Oh he said, “I wasn’t in the military”. Yesterday I was talking to an old friend of mine named Bob. He is almost 80 years old. He was telling me about being in the Navy, in the submarine service, in WWII. He told me about being over 100 ft. underwater in the sub, when a Japanese destroyer was dropping depth charges on them for hours. So I just had to differentiate.
